By the end of the first class, you will have gained a basic understanding of how to type on a computer keyboard and have access to an online account to continue practicing so that you may become a confident and efficient keyboard typist.

This is an in-person private lesson at the Mt. Lebanon Public Library. Take as many classes as you’d like, even if it’s just a single one.

Unlike my classes for kids and adults, private lessons are available all year round. Availability is subject to change based on the Library’s hours and Tessa’s schedule.
Lesson Topics
In the first lesson, we’ll go over proper hand placement, posture, and typing techniques. For the remaining lessons, you can choose any of the following in any order while we practice typing.
- Just Practice: practice typing while I watch, analyze, and provide feedback on technique (recommended age: all).
- Health: learn about the effects of prolonged keyboard usage and how we can prevent them in addition to providing relief for them (recommended age: all).
- Ergonomic & Assistive Technology: explore how machines are made to be inclusive and customized to its user (recommended age: all).
- Creative Writing: apply your typing skills to create your own unique content (recommended age: 10+).
- Computer Applications: learn the basics of Word (or Google Docs) and why I love spreadsheets (Excel/Google Sheets) (recommended age: 10+).
- Programming Fundamentals: think like a machine and understand the basics of all programming languages (recommended age: all).
- Frontend Web Development: learn the basics of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to code your own website or interactive web application (recommended age: 10+).
- Internet Safety: digital citizenship—how to safely use the internet or, if my student is a parent, we can also discuss how to implement parental controls, screen usage limitations, etc. (recommended age: all).
- AI Literacy: learn more about what artificial intelligence is and what it is not. We’ll go through its limits, its possibilities, and how to safely use it (recommended age: 10+).
I included the approximate recommended age for some topics, but all topics can be modified to be age appropriate for the student.
About the Instructor
Tessa Watkins (they/them) is a resident in Mt. Lebanon, PA. They are a professional programmer of 10+ years experience and an expert-level typist with a speed averaging 90 words-per-minute (WPM) and a 99% accuracy—the speaking speed for the average person is ranged 130-160 WPM and the average reading speed for adults is 200-250 WPM.
Tessa and their husband have a child at Jefferson Elementary that started learning to type at five years old before even learning how to read.
