We are a Member of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower!

3 minute read

AuRise Creative is proud to support the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower as a registered member of the program. Many disabilities, such as autism, chronic pain, epilepsy, low vision, hearing loss, dementia, anxiety disorders, and brain injuries, are not immediately obvious to others.

If you have an invisible disability, you can choose to wear or display the Sunflower to discreetly indicate to our team that you may need some additional support when working with us.

I wear the Sunflower to show that I have a hidden disability.
Tessa Watkins, the founder of AuRise Creative, also has invisible disabilities and is a proud wearer of the Sunflower.
What do you do differently if I wear/display the Sunflower?

It depends on your needs, but in general: I am patient so take as long as you need to communicate; I will follow-up oral meetings with written notes via email including what we discussed and what both of us need to do; I can provide thorough instructions upon request; all video meetings have automatic live transcriptions enabled in English.

Do I need a diagnosis or do you need to know what my disability is/disabilities are?

Nope! Just let me know how I can accommodate you, I don’t need to know why.

What accommodations do you need?

I prefer visual communication so emails, text messages, or live captions are best.

Patience during real-time oral communication also goes a long way as I may stutter, speak slowly, or use incorrect words/phrases without realizing it and it is absolutely okay to ask me, “did you mean to say X?” if I use the wrong word/phrase. Please ask for clarification if something I say doesn’t make sense.

I cannot provide accurate time estimates for how long a task will take for me to complete; I can only provide you estimates based on similar work I’ve done. I work better with deadlines so let me know if you have a timeline for when you need the task completed.

How do I get a Sunflower lanyard?

Just ask me for one and we’ll meet up in person and I can give one to you personally.

Alternatively, if you live in Mt. Lebanon, you can get them from the Mt. Lebanon Municipal Office (710 Washington Road), the Mt. Lebanon Public Safety Center (555 Washington Road), or the Mt. Lebanon Public Library (16 Castle Shannon Blvd).

The Pittsburgh International Airport also offers them pre-security at the landside information desk and post-security at the airside information desk. You can also request for them to mail them to you at info@flypittsburgh.com.

How do I join the Sunflower as a member too?

The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower scheme has six (6) membership plans available. The Charity and Sole trader plans are both $50 per year (and AuRise Creative is a sole proprietor LLC, so I got started on the sole trader plan). The other plans start at $300/year.

I’m an individual, what can I do to help spread the word?

You can help spread awareness of this program by simply wearing the lanyard, talking about it, and asking your local government, schools, businesses, and organizations to join as a member! Here is more information like things to download.
